What can be sweeter than joining thousands of
Canadians in a celebration filled with cakes, pastries and other desserts? That was the scene at this year’s
Canada’s Baking and Sweets Show. The first-ever event was a huge success, bringing together families all the
while, showing both Canadian and international baking talents.
Lifestyler visited the show, which took place this past weekend at the
International
Centre in Mississauga, Ont.
It seemed as though they
kept pulling magic tricks out of their (chef’s) hat. With special guests such as Erin Bolger, also known as
The Happy
Baker on her Food Network
Canada web-series, Heather White and Lori Joyce, stars of W Network’s
The
Cupcake Girls, and Cake
Boss star Buddy Valastro, the weekend just kept getting better and
better.
In addition to the
delicious cupcakes and desserts offered by companies such as The Cheesecake
Factory,
La Casa
Dolce,
and St. Phillips
Bakery,
just to name a few, guests were able to part in baking demonstrations, competitions and of course, the
ever-popular sampling of various baked goods.
But not even the
deliciously moist red velvet cupcakes topped with decadent cream cheese frosting could stop guests gathered
around the main stage at 2 p.m. on Sunday for a special presentation by the Cake
Boss himself.
Valastro appeared on stage
in front of a recreated version of his famous Hoboken, N.J., bakery, Carlo’s Bake
Shop.
The recreated shop wowed the audience not only for its similarity to the original but also because it was
made with over 5,000 mini balloons.
In addition to
Cake
Boss, Valastro is also the star and host of TLC’s Kitchen
Boss and Next Great
Baker. He showed off his comedic side with a family guy attitude, as he addressed the sold-out
audience.
“Every time I come to
Canada, I've got to tell you guys. You make me feel like part of the family,” he
said.
