Cool contouring eliminates fat for good

By Kimberly Rupnarain | July 13, 2011

For years, losing that last 10 pounds has been the hardest part of any person’s weight loss journey. From post-pregnancy belly fat to stubborn rolls, getting rid of pesky problem areas has often come down to the extreme measure of liposuction, a surgery that is not only invasive, but comes with many potential risks as well as a long recovery time of approximately three to four months.

But now, with the growing popularity of Zeltiq’s CoolSculpting technique, extreme methods like liposuction are no longer the only available route for those looking to shed those final pounds. The practice of Dr. Mahmood Kara comprises some of the Greater Toronto Area’s most well-known cosmetic surgery clinics and includes the Zeltiq CoolSculpting technique as a service.

Educated in the field of plastic surgery at the University of Western Ontario’s faculty of medicine, Kara has been performing cosmetic surgery in the Toronto area since 1995. A member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons, he’s become one of Toronto’s most notable plastic surgeons and has been an important part of popularizing the CoolSculpting technique in southern Ontario.

The Zeltiq CoolSculpting technique itself is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure used across North America as an alternative to liposuction. Ideal for patients who are at stable weight and generally practise good health and eating habits, CoolSculpting uses a method called cryolipolysis to contour the body. The cool temperature of cryolipolysis goes beneath skin to chill the deepest layer of fat cells without damaging the overlying skin. In the following months, the body begins to eliminate the targeted fat cells, sculpting and contouring your shape in a method far easier and less complicated than spending hours in the gym or going under the knife.

A single procedure, which can result in up to a 20 per cent reduction in body fat, is not only effective, but painless as well. Patients are free to read or listen to music while Kara carefully controls the CoolSculpting handset around the selected problem areas. The only requirement is that patients lie down for the treatment, which may last anywhere between one and three hours depending on the size and complexity of the area being treated.

And because the technique requires no incisions or invasive surgery, there is no downtime after the treatment or special requirements for aftercare. Patients are free to return to a normal routine while the treatment continues to break down fat cells and eliminate them naturally from the body. While many who undergo the procedure will be able to see results from just one treatment, Kara can advise patients as to whether or not multiple treatments will better provide them with their desired results. With locations in Yorkville, Vaughan, Whitby and Scarborough, Kara’s clinics are open to anyone wanting to say goodbye to fat, once and for all. •
