For many students studying in Canada and
internationally, gaining entrance into an illustrious university is the paramount goal of hours of hard work
throughout secondary school At Pattison High School in Vancouver, helping students both local and international
reach this goal has always been the staff’s main focus. With such offerings as personalized graduation plans
and a trimester school system, Pattison allows students the opportunity to fast-track their high school
careers.
“With the trimester system, students have the chance to take upwards of 12 credits per year, whereas regular
high schools only allow eight,” says Pattison High School principal Ken Davies. “This means students can
graduate sooner and move on to post-secondary sooner as well.”
In addition to having the opportunity to accelerate in a linear system, students also benefit from Pattison’s
unusually small class sizes. With a student-teacher ratio of 15:1, the students gain the benefits of
receiving individual attention.
“One of the things that set us apart from other high schools is that our small class sizes allow for more
one-on-one time,” says Davies. “This helps all of our students with their individual learning needs.”
With both the accelerated school year and the individualized education system, Pattison has helped students
gain acceptance into schools such as the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Emily Carr
University of Art and Design, and universities in Eastern Canada and the United States.
