Incentive to Create

Nissan Canada’s newest contest challenges Canadians to define “innovation” for a chance to win big

By Kimberly Rupnarain | November 17, 2011

Ever feel like you might have a flair for advertising, but never thought to pursue it? Have you ever seen a car commercial and thought you could have created a better one? Now, Canadians across the country will have the opportunity to do just that with the Nissan Innovation Challenge, a three-phase contest launched this week, in which one Canadian will win a brand new Nissan vehicle as well as a shot at creating the motor company’s newest national TV commercial. To enter the initial stage, participants must first “Like” the Nissan Canada Facebook page, before submitting a 140-character definition of what the term “innovation” is to them.

“Innovation has been the guiding principal at Nissan for nearly a century,” said Nissan Canada’s Director of Marketing, Judy Wheeler, in a press release. “This contest further ascertains Nissan’s unwavering commitment to offer ‘Innovation for All,’ and will effectively capture the innovative spirit that exists within Nissan customers and fans across the country.”

The definitions will be due by Dec. 5, 2011, after which a panel of judges will narrow down submissions to the best 200, based on clear, concise communication, emotion, creativity and originality. The 200 semi-finalists will then be asked to submit a short, simple video on Facebook, which explains the pitch for their commercial idea and ties it in with their own definition of innovation, as well a specific Nissan vehicle.

The online world will have a chance to make their voices heard, when Nissan opens the poll to Facebook users and asks them to vote for their favourite video submissions. The five entrants who receive the most votes will trek to Toronto to pitch their ideas in-person to the judges, a process that will be documented and shown on Facebook in the format of two webisodes.

Finally, after the second webisode airs, one contestant will be crowned the victor, winning not only a brand new Nissan vehicle, but the opportunity to have their idea turned into a national TV spot.

And if you’re not sure you’re an advertising executive in the making? Enter anyway. Anyone who submits a definition in the first phase or votes in the second phase is automatically entered to win a free Toshiba tablet and after witnessing the new Toshiba Thrive for ourselves, we're certain that incentive to get those creative juices flowing has never been better.
