The sounds of Canada’s famed Orchestre Symphonique
de Montréal (OSM) will never be the same, with the opening of their new performance venue, la Maison
symphonique de
Montréal.
Designed by Toronto-based architecture firm Diamond
and Schmitt, with acoustic consulting from Tateo Nakajima of Artec Consultants Inc. and Robert Essert of
Sound Space Design, the newest addition to la Place des Arts is a concert hall created specifically to
enhance the auditory reception of the OSM’s classical symphonies. The custom-fitted acoustics are a contrast
to the OSM’s previous home, the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, whose auditorium often caused the reach of the OSM’s
quietest notes to be lost in the large space.
La Maison symphonique houses 2,100 seats in its
modified shoebox structure, including three balconies. Equipped with curves and adjustable ceiling canopies,
the OSM will carry the same tune, but will sound far sweeter.
