The iPad and the iPhone: Technology or media for
art and design? According to David Hockney, such devices are perfect vessels for creating extraordinary works
of art.
The 74-year-old
British artist has been creating artwork with his iPhone since 2008, after first purchasing the now
über-popular device. Beginning with his fingers and thumb followed by the “brushes” application among
other apps, Hockney began producing artwork right on his iPhone’s touchscreen. Once the iPad came along last
year, Hockney was able to better create his designs with the help of a stylus, not to mention the device’s
larger screen size. Eliminating the need for any extra drawing materials and mess, Hockney demonstrates the
vast capabilities and limitlessness of Apple technology, while simultaneously producing aesthetically
pleasing pieces of art. With close to 1,000 images under his belt — or screen — it was perfect timing for the
Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto to take notice. Displaying 100 iPhone drawings and iPad drawings, some of
which include playback animations, The Institute for Contemporary Culture (ICC) at the ROM presents
David
Hockney’s Fresh Flowers: Drawing on iPhones and iPadsfrom October 8, 2011 to January 1, 2012.
