With a history that dates back 2,000 years, the
Belgian city of Bruges is a profoundly romantic UNESCO World Heritage
Site with a wealth
of medieval architecture along its waterways. Add in a colourful winter festival, and this city becomes even
more reminiscent of a fairy tale. The city’s name — “Bryggja” in Old Norse — means “landing stage,” an
accurate description when hordes visit during the festive months. Beginning in late November, Bruges’ city
centre becomes an elaborately decorated Christmas market serving mulled wines and seasonal treats, but it’s
the skating rink and elaborate artistry in the nearby Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival that transforms the
city’s market square into Europe’s winter wonderland. •
