Beautifying Your Walls

Drive your plants up the wall with Wally

By Sarah DiVito | June 4, 2010

Your house really feels like summer once you’ve incorporated as much greenery as possible. Flowers and plants litter your outside veranda and kitchen countertops… but what about your walls?

Instead of cluttering the floor with potted plants, your wall is a fabulously chic alternative to get the summery green treatment as well. Woolly Pocket Gardening Company has an innovative way to do this with their beautiful woolly pockets.

The concept of the Wally is so simple and yet so inventive and stylish for any kind of home. It is an absolutely creative way for those who live in lofts, apartments and townhouses that may not have a garden or a lot of space for potted plants inside.

These stunning urban gardens are flexible, breathable, modular gardening containers. They hold pants and flowers on the wall for something called vertical gardening, or a living wall. These are an organized system of plants that grow vertically up a wall, fence or other vertical surface. It’s a beautiful way to show off plants, cover an unsightly wall or create a summer oasis right in your own home.

They can be used both indoors and outdoors because of their built-in moisture barriers that will help protect furniture. They are made out of two things: breathable felt and the built-in moisture barrier.

The breathable portion is made of 100% recycled plastic bottles that have been industrially “felted.” Because it’s derived from recycled plastic bottles, it allows the soil to refresh its oxygen supply; this breathability lets the soil aerate naturally, which reduces the need to drain them and also helps the plants to conserve water.

The moisture barrier, which is made according to military standards for impermeability from 60 % recycled plastic bottles, will help protect furniture inside the room. Each pocket is stitched together by hand with a double lock stitch and strong UV-resistant nylon thread.

Another really great thing about the Wooly Pocket Wally is that it is easy to install and very easy to maintain. Depending on your wall space, you can get one Wally pocket or five Wally pockets. They come in black, chocolate, camel hair and peacock blue colours.

Here are instructions on what you need in order to install your Wooly Wally System:

A wall or other vertical surface
Woolly Wallys + wall anchors, one for each Woolly Wally grommet
An electric drill, screwdriver, tape measure, level
Blue masking tape and a pen
Quality soil
Garden shovel or pail
Plants!
An assistant and about two hours of time

1. Using your level and measuring tape, place one piece of blue tape vertically down the centre of the wall where
you want to hang your Pockets.

2. Using your level and measuring tape, place a piece of blue tape horizontally along the wall where you'll be
drilling the holes to hang the Woolly Wally grommets. When hanging multiple rows space them 13" on
centre vertically so that Wallys overlap a little to hide the wall behind them.

3. Using your measuring tape, mark the blue tape where the holes should be drilled and pre-drill each hole.

4. Remove the blue tape and install the wall anchors into the pre-drilled holes.

5. Hang your Woolly Wallys using the screws and washers that came with them. When you hang multiple
Pockets, save the anchors that will hang two Pockets for last so you can double them up.

6. Fill each Pocket halfway with soil. Add your plants and top each Pocket off with more soil, as necessary.
